The American English Institute (AEI) is part of the Department of Linguistics. Students from all over the world come to AEI and immerse themselves in American English and culture. The University of Oregon and Oregon offer unique experiences for students in an immersion program.

Oregon is a state on the Western Coast of the United States. It is bordered by Washington State (to the north), California (to the south), Idaho (to the east), and the Pacific Ocean (to the west). Oregon became the 33rd state in 1859.

Salem, the state's capital, is located between Portland, the state's largest city, and Eugene, the home of AEI and the University of Oregon. Eugene is also Oregon's second largest city.

Oregon has an amazing variety of natural beauty. From west to east: the rugged Pacific coastline, the fertile Willamette Valley, the peaks of the Cascade Mountain Range, and a high desert across much the eastern side of the state.

This is Mt. Hood, a dormant volcano, located near Portland, Oregon. In the winter, skiers go to the mountain slopes, while in the summer, hikers walk through many trails.

Eugene is Oregon's second largest city. It is located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, where the McKenzie and Willamette Rivers join together. Eugene is filled with community involvement, many parks for recreation and enjoyment, annual events that include music, performing arts and much more.

The University of Oregon is a public, coeducational research university. Within the university there are eight colleges and schools in which students study. The UO was established in 1876 and is the second oldest university in the state.

The UO also sends American students abroad to study in Japan at seven different universities. Waseda is one of of the most popular university destinations.

The University of Oregon is a very large campus, so it can take a few days to get used to your surroundings. Maps like this will be provided during your orientation and you will quickly learn your way around campus.

Some of the buildings on campus are older, historic buildings. This is Deady Hall, the oldest building on campus and the first building of the University of Oregon when it was built in 1877. Today, it still holds classrooms where students take courses.

This is the main center of the campus, near the Erb Memorial Union, where there are many restaurants and places to relax between classes with friends. During the summers, there is often music in this outside amphitheater.

The Oregon coast is favorite destination during any time of year, especially in the summer. Everyone enjoys walking on the beach without shoes and stepping into the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Dress in very casual for students in the United States. It is also very relaxed at the University of Oregon. You can wear jeans, t-shirts, skirts, or even shorts on campus. The warm summer weather is perfect for such clothes; however, it's a good idea to bring a jacket or sweater for the cool evenings.
