A Guide to Personal Growth
Stress Management Techniques
www.nodonuthole.com Stress is characterized by a state of alarm and adrenaline production, short-term resistance as a coping mechanism, and exhaustion. Common stress symptoms include irritability, muscular tension, inability to concentrate and a variety of physical reactions, such as headaches and elevated heart rate. Stress can significantly affect many of the body's immune systems. Responses to stress include adaptation, psychological coping such as stress management, anxiety, and depression. Over the long term, stress can lead to diminished health and/or increased propensity to illness. To avoid this, stress must be managed. Stress management encompasses techniques intended to equip a person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress, with stress defined as a person's physiological response to an internal or external stimulus that triggers the fight-or-flight response. Stress management is effective when a person uses strategies to cope with or alter stressful situations. There are several ways of coping with stress, such as controlling the source of stress or learning to set limits and to say "No" to some demands that other people may make. Some techniques of time management may also help a person to control stress. Using breathing exercises can help you feel less overwhelmed. Taking a walk to cool off instead of reaching for a cigarette is also helpful. Using meditation can reverse your stress response, relax your muscles, and soothe you. |
