Using real world projects as examples we will explore the development process from brief to completion, examining the challenges you may face along the way.

As more time passes, people are starting to realize that Distributed Version Control Systems (DVCS) are not a fad and are not going to fade into obscurity. Instead they offer incredible freedom and flexibility, and because of that, they are seeing more adoption every day. In this presentation, I will explain the differences -- both technical and mental -- between Centralized VCS and DVCS, and demo Git, one of the more popular DVCS implementations that exists today. Git is fast, friendly, and feature-rich, but if you've been using SVN or CVS for very long it can be a significant shift in thought. Once you go Git, you'll never want to go back. And the awesome part is that you don't have to: Git can be your new SVN client!

Learn about the many built-in caching mechanisms available in ColdFusion for improving application performance. Also explore advanced caching strategies with ColdFusion using distributed caching systems such as JCS, EHCache, and Memcached. After a brief introduction to distributed caching, we'll cover how these various systems can be integrated with ColdFusion as well as usage scenarios.

I gave this presentation at CFUNDERGROUND 08. The intent was to talk about the kinds of things that separate 'scripters' from real professional developers. Source control, design patterns, testing, etc. Unfortunately this presentation is really meant more for an in-class discussion so the slides won't help you too much, but I've placed them online in case someone else wants to use them as a guide for discussion.
